"Physical courage, which despises all danger, will make a man
brave in one way;
and moral courage, which despises all opinion, will make a man brave
in another."

Charles Caleb Colton
About the Author and this Blog:
I am an architect (the building kind) by formal training, as
well as a programmer (the self-taught kind) who, over the
years, has been involved with a number of different software
development projects in the medical and design fields, as well
as having taught computer programming courses at a couple of
colleges and universities. I am also pretty handy, having
performed a considerable amount of work in a wide variety of
construction trades.
After graduating from college, I studied for a year as an
apprentice with the Frank
Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, living and working at
Taliesin
in Wisconsin, and
Taliesin West
in Arizona. As a designer, I place myself firmly in the
organic architecture tradition.
I grew up in the mid-west, resided on the east coast for a
long while, and finally migrating out to the Pacific Northwest,
where I have lived happily for over 25 years, with my wife, dog
and cat — so I guess at this point I would have to call
this home!
I play piano (poorly), with my musical tastes ranging from
classical (Ravel, Grieg, Rachmaninov,
Hanson)
to jazz (Chick Corea,
Pat Metheny, McCoy Tyner, Peggy Stern) to rock
(Steve Winwood,
Joe Jackson,
Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan) to new age (Philip Aaberg, Scott Cossu,
Kurt Bestor) to the
difficult to classify (Moondog, Cirque du
Soleil). Of course, this is just a small sampling.
I am a sailor who stupidly owned a Ranger-29 sailboat for over
20 years and then wised up, sold it, and started chartering,
or better yet, sailing on my friend's boats! I enjoy biking,
hiking, travel, philosophy and photography.
The best television show ever produced was Northern
Exposure, while my all time favorite movie is Francis
Ford Coppola's Tucker:
The Man & His Dreams. Other favorites include: The
Shawshank Redemption (Drama), Groundhog
Day (Comedy), Love
Actually (Romantic), V
for Vendetta (Science Fiction) and Unforgiven
(Western), Heat,
(Crime), although there are many others.
I am an atheist and staunch individualist who despises
collectivism of any variety. This blog was originally
created to report on news related to
The John
Galt Pledge initiative and the fight against
the imposition of mandatory national service for American
citizens, but has since branched out to include discussions
on a variety of topics which focus on the themes of personal
autonomy and responsibility, individual rights, liberty, and
constitutionally constrained government.
